Squash Bug Control

Squash bugs are a common and difficult pest to deal with in the garden. They are large and have hard bodies, which means they are protected from predators, and they lay their eggs on the undersides of leaves rather than in the soil, so unfortunately beneficial nematodes do not target them either.

*Note that the squash Bugs we are discussing here are NOT the same as the squash vine borer, which SF nematodes will target.

What works best for Squash Bug control?...

The only beneficial insect that can be able to eat them are Praying Mantis.

Think Preventative

Luckily, there is an effective method for cleaning your squash plants. Here are the supplies you will need:

  • Duct Tape
  • Soapy Water
  • Diatomaceous Earth or Neem Oil (be sure to read the safety instructions and note that these products also affect beneficial insects)

Follow these steps:

  1. Use the tape to remove any eggs on the leaves
  2. Knock adults off the plant into the soapy water
  3. Dust your plants with DE or apply Neem
  4. Repeat once a week or as needed for your level of infestation
